Swing and a Miss

Well, all experiments can’t work out perfectly, right?

I decided to try these polishes together:

08-30-13 bottles

Seems like a fun combo, right? Below are some pics of the final product. (Please note that I am still experimenting with taking photos in my lightbox, that I am using an iPhone camera, and that I painted my nails in a hurry. Maybe how much I dislike this manicure is coloring how I view these photos, but I took a million and none seem that great to me. Apologies!)

Here's a pic before glitter. I really like both of these colors by themselves.

08-30-13 First Timer

08-30-13 Sweet Hook

Sweet Hook was good in two coats. First Timer was surprisingly almost good in one thick coat (in my experience Essies are super finicky and take at least 3 coats to look nice).

Now, Glitterbox… I should like it. I mean, square holo glitter? Sign me up. I first saw it as a swatch on Samarium’s Swatches and it looked so gorgeous that I ordered it right then and there. And it is really sparkly and lovely in the bottle.

Here's a macro. So pretty and fun!

I had a hard time getting a good “sparkle” picture so I made a little gif:

Color is slightly off, but sparkliesssss

I’ve worn it once before, ages ago when I first got it, and I remembered the formula being a little annoying but not this bad. I know polish can get icky over time so maybe that’s what happened here, but the base was so thick it was really difficult to move the glitter around or put on evenly, drying so lumpy that even two coats of Seche Vite couldn’t smooth it out completely (which is a big pet peeve of mine). I couldn’t get a pic that captured the bumpiness well but trust, it’s one lumpy bastard of a mani. Add that to the fact that I don’t love the pastel glitter pieces over either of these two colors – there’s some purple shimmer you can see in the upper right corner of the macro that does not show up at all over Sweet Hook or First Timer – and blergggg this mani is a total fail for me. I’ll add some thinner in Glitterbox and hopefully it’ll be better next time, although I will only wear this over dark colors in the future.

I hate taking off polish so quickly (especially one like this that’ll be a pain in the ass to remove with the glitter and double layers of top coat), but life is too short to keep on a manicure you don’t like, right? Eh, I’ve had it on for two days, I’ve done my time. I think next I’ll try a combo guaranteed to please, like something holographic.

Thanks for reading! A x

DIY Lightbox

So since I don’t have fancy camera equipment, I thought I would attempt to make a lightbox. I’m actually really pleased with the results considering I made it in a really short amount of time (although I had to stop in the middle and finish it another day, which is why the lighting is all different in the pics) and the fact that I usually suck at DIY.

I followed this tutorial, which was really easy. I used a box I’d kept from my recent move, scissors, white tissue paper, tape, and white poster board. I took some step-by-step pics but it was basically the same exact thing as the tutorial so I’ll just show you the before and after, because I’m still excited it turned out so well:

Those lamps are supposed to clip onto the side of a desk but my desk is from IKEA and I don’t trust the particleboard not to get messed up so I kept the lamps balanced in the little boxes they came in.

I need to experiment with lighting so these shots might not be that great, but I took a few pics of my current mani to try out my new creation. I decided to do something fun with crackle polishes since I haven’t used those in forever, and that is the point of this blog after all!

I gotta work on my hand poses! I decided to randomly sponge the crackles to try something new. I was not a fan at first but it’s really grown on me, plus it’s been on for a few days and there’s barely any tip wear which is always a plus.

Thanks for stopping by!

Hello there!

Welcome to my little corner of the blogging world!

I’m new to all this so I’m sure things will change along the way, but as of right now this site is going to be mainly nail polish oriented. I love nail polish and have a million of them, but lately I’ve been pretty uninspired and have just stuck to reusing the same handful of colors. I decided to start a blog to force myself to be a little more creative and step outside my comfort zone – colors in the cooler end of the color spectrum with the occasional skittles or glitter topper – so I’m going to expand my horizons in the next few weeks! I unfortunately don’t have any awesome equipment like some bloggers but I’ll be doing my best to take great photos with my iPhone 4 camera and may even whip together a little lightbox to make my pictures real purdy for y’all.

Here are some non-polish things I love that will probably find their way into my posts:

Halloween – On the last day of September my apartment is already decorated and I’ve been thinking about costumes for at least three months. The best holiday!
Television – I watch an embarrassing amount of TV but in my defense, there’s so much great stuff on right now! (Okay, there’s also some non-great stuff that I should be ashamed to watch but I do anyway – looking at you, PLL.)
Boba Time’s caramel macchiatos – So goooooooooood. I tried this one day on a whim and now I’m obsessed.
Themes – Any theme for anything, I’m all over it. You’re having a 1920s party? I’m already YouTube-ing how to finger wave my hair. First game of football season? My outfit and nail polish are in team colors. Breaking Bad marathon? I’ll bring the blue sky cupcakes. (And I don’t even really like that show, you guys.)
Pinterest – I know, I know, but it’s really helpful for certain things, plus it soothes me to make random boards when I’m stressed (is that weird?).

Thanks for dropping by and I hope you come back soon!
