Nail Quickies: Confetti Nails

Hey y’all! How’s everyone’s weekend been? I’ve been super busy lately so I wanted to do something quick yet fun, so I thought rainbow glitter was in order. :)

Release looks a little too purple here, FYI.

I debated putting this over black but decided to try out one of my new China Glaze The Giver collection polishes. Release is a grayish lavender and the formula was great in two coats, and it’s a perfect neutral to soften up the glitter explosion of Pahlish’s Great Wide Open.

Forgive my cuticles. I have no excuses, I just keep forgetting to moisturize them. For shame!

Great Wide Open is such a fun polish. I wish there were a few less white glitter pieces, but I do love their inclusion – I think it adds a slightly more sophisticated touch to the rainbow explosion. It was easy to move glitter around on my nails to get them where I wanted and there were a lot of pieces in each swipe of polish, too. GWO is just such a happy polish! I gotta remember to pull this one out more often!

I don’t know about you, but I can’t believe that it’s December tomorrow! I need to finish planning my holiday manicures so I can have the first one up in a day or so – the way time is going by this year, I need to have a schedule so I get everything I want to do done before the year’s over. Ahhh okay I can’t think about that any more, so I’ll just say thank you so much for reading! I’ll see you next time – A x

Glamourous Jewel Tones

Who doesn’t love jewel tones? They’re so rich and luxurious – not necessarily super bright, but eye-catching and completely inviting nonetheless. I wanted to do something with a bunch of jewel tones, and I really love how this came out!

I didn’t want to do anything too crazy since I knew I’d be using five different colors, so I decided to do a tiny line of gold down the center of each nail, to sort of unify the look. I chose China Glaze’s 2030, my fav chrome that’s a fabulous cool-toned champagne, and did one coat on each nail (two on a few, where my application sucked and I made it smudgy). I applied a light coat of top coat and let it dry for about the length of one episode of Gilmore Girls (my sister and I started a rematch when it came to Netflix, and we’re almost to season four – my favorite, which I know is controversial, but I love it!). Then I carefully applied one piece of striping tape down the center of each nail. It was pretty easy to eyeball, and even my left hand looks mostly straight. #winning

From there I did two coats of each jewel-tone color. Sexy Divide was the one I had to be really careful with, since it’s really streaky and – oddly for a dark metallic – kinda sheer? It usually needs three coats but I somehow managed to apply the perfect thick-but-not-too-thick coat first, so the second coat covered beautifully. Make sure your tape is super secure before you paint over it – I should’ve pressed down a little harder, because on a few of my nails the top color seeped under the tape, but it’s not too bad.

See on my pinkie and middle how the polish got onto the gold portion? Luckily it's barely noticeable in person.

I wanted to do all metallics but I didn’t want to throw a red, the only other metallic jewel tone I had, into the mix, so I ended up using Butter London’s Wallis on my thumb. It’s a shimmer, which bothers me a tiny bit because I wanted a uniform metallic formula, but I love the golden olive with the other hues so I’m pretty pleased! All of these colors are so gorgeous, I can’t even deal – Mason and Giovanna are probs my favorite, they’re just so glowy and vibrant, ugh, I love them! I wanted to keep this mani on for Thanksgiving but it definitely started to chip after a day or so because a) Butter London formula that hates me, b) dinner prep. I ended up just having to touch it up because I ran out of time to do a brand new mani, and I’m glad I did because I really, really loved this look, it’s so gorgeously fall!

A full sunlight shot (in my car, obvs) to show the gorgeous glow of these metallics!

I meant to have this up before Thanksgiving, but then I got busy, so I hope all my US readers had a lovely Thanksgiving/are having a nice long weekend/managed to snag some great Black Friday deals! (I definitely spent way too much, but they were mostly presents so I can’t be too annoyed with myself.) Thank you so much for reading! I’ll see you next time – A x

Nail Quickies: Luxurious Butter London Hues

Hi everyone! I hope you’re having a lovely (pre-Thanksgiving, if you’re American) week! I’ve got a super quick post for you today using two rich Butter London shades.

Sorry for the weird glitter clumping of Bit Faker - I left it facedown overnight before this pic.

I go back and forth with Butter London – the colors are really fun, but they wear terribly on me and are often so streaky or sheer I don’t know how they get away with charging $15 per bottle. But I really do love these two colors: Bluey, a gorgeous peacock blue, was one of the first Butter London polishes I ever got, and Bit Faker is a so-not-me-but-it-somehow-caught-my-eye opaque bronze-y glitter that I got on sale last year. I love how luxe teal and bronze look together, and I decided to do a Bit Faker glitter fade over a base of Bluey.

Bit Faker is so packed with glitter – which normally is great – that it makes it hard to get a nice gradation on a glitter fade. I also put a little too much of a second coat of glitter at the tips to try and cover up Bluey peeking through, resulting in a sizable bump that wasn’t helped by top coat. Not a huge deal, but it’s a polish pet peeve of mine.

I still think this looks nice, though – just kinda like I stuck my wet nails in a tub of glitter instead of a nice, soft gradient.

Thanks for reading! I’ve got a look I really love for the next post, that’ll be up in a day or so. See you next time – A x

Nail Quickies: Rainbow Flakie

Hello, dear readers! I apologize for my absence this past week – I’ve had a few manis but nothing that felt interesting or pretty enough to post. I’ve been feeling a little lazy lately, so I’ve actually only been doing plain color nails. I KNOW, but I just haven’t been feeling even simple nail art. Today’s isn’t all that exciting, either, but I think it’s purdy!

11-17-14 bottles

I’m not usually one for blue-toned purples, but I grabbed No More Film randomly a few months ago and eh, it’s all right. It looks almost black on the nail unless you’re in direct sunlight, and I usually avoid those kinds of colors but it’s a nice base to make the flakes of Twisted pop. Anyway, I nabbed three of the new ILNP flakie polishes in the pre-order last Friday, which is what made me want to dig out one of the flakie polishes I already owned.

Sorry for the janky cuticles!

Sorry for the janky cuticles!

This is only one coat of Twisted, and as you can see, it’s got a really great amount of flakes. It felt super smooth, too, even before top coat. I wish there was more blue to really round out the rainbow-y-ness of the flakes, but I love all the different colors, it’s so fun – different than glitter but like a party on your nails!

I’m so excited for the ILNP polishes, though. They won’t get here for almost a month but ughhhhh they look so gorgeous! They’re not like the usual flakie polishes – they’re opaque and seem to be made out of a shiny, foil-esque substance as opposed to traditional flakes like Twisted, which are sheer and iridescent. I had a hell of a time choosing which ones to order – even at a dollar off, they’re pricier than I like to pay for polish, so I limited myself to three, and I spent foreverrrrr clicking between swatches, trying to narrow it down, plus a lot of them are very similar, so it was difficult choosing. I tried to get three that had different color shifts, but I have one or two more in mind I might snatch up later as a Christmas present to myself. Exciteddddd.

Thanks for reading! I’ll try to do some fun nail art and post something more interesting soon. Thanks for reading, see you next time – A x

Mustard Mani

Hi everyone, I hope you’re having a great weekend! Today I have another fall-hued manicure, using my new Sephora Formula X Brushed Metallic (what a mouthful, eh?) polish.

11-08-14 polishes

This is two careful coats of Ambitious. These polishes are weird – I had to re-do one nail because the first coat dried with a weird line/crack thing, and even putting another coat didn’t cover it, it just kinda…sunk right in. I don’t know why, but I love this polish. I’m weirdly drawn to this color – it’s one of those “ugly pretty” shades that normally aren’t my jam, but something about the this particular mustard (or “goldenrod,” as it’s described on the Sephora website) plus the metallic sheen and the super matte texture is really drawing me in right now.

11-08-14 curled around bottle

I did a little berry-colored accent nail on my pointer with Cherry Cherry Bang Bang, an old fav. To make everything more cohesive, I stamped with black on my middle fingers and used a dotting tool to put a little black dot on my pointer and pinkie. The stamp I used is from one of my new Mo-You plates, which I adore. Look how fun these designs are:

Hipster Collection plate 08. Also, damn it's hard to get a picture with stamping plates that doesn't reflect everything yet still shows all the designs!

This didn’t wear very long because mattes always get chip wear super quick, sometimes within a matter of hours, but I really liked this. I love manicures with a little bit of everything – different textures, stamping, mixed designs…

My sister made me laugh at an inopportune moment so the dot on my pinkie is a little wonky :/

Do you have a favorite matte polish? Did you get any of these Sephora ones or the new, limited-release Zoya ones? Let me know in the comments! Thanks for reading, see you next time – A x
