June Nail Art Challenge #7: Beach!

Hello, dear readers! How’s your weekend panning out? I did a lot of fun stuff outdoor this weekend – like flea market perusing! – but ughhhhhhhh have I ever mentioned how much I hate summer? Because I DO. It’s not even July and I’m already over being hot all the time. Blerg. Anyway, being hot in the summer nicely segues into today’s prompt – beach nails!

I saw this beach waves-inspired look on Pinterest somewhere and thought the idea was perfect since I love me a waterspotted mani, and gave it a go.

I attempted to do the same water-spotted technique over the gradient as I did for my turquoise nails, but with white polish. The white was way too sheer, though, so I did 3-5 drops before spraying, but then that made the white a little more opaque than I wanted…I mean, it doesn’t look terrible, just not as great as I wanted.

I do think that it gets the “sea foam floating over the sand and water” look I was going for across, although some of the polish was a little more…wavy? like on my ring finger than that foamy dappled/spotted look I wanted. I probably should’ve experimented with how far away to spray to get bigger spots, but I’ll keep that in mind for next time.

I did really love these nails, though! I think they’re really pretty, and I hope you do, too! I only have one nail art challenge left in June, so thanks for reading, and I’ll see you then! – A x

June Nail Art Challenge #1: Squares!

Hi, everyone! Today I’ve got the first challenge of my June nail art challenge, so let’s get to it!

Summer has officially hit, and when it’s over 90 degrees out, all I want to do it wear NEONS. I kept this mani super simple because I kinda just wanted some neon skittles! The yellow and orange are from my prize box of polishes that China Glaze sent me a few weeks ago, and they’re those old-school neons, so the formula is streaky as hell and needs a lot of coats, damnnnn the neon is so bright! The green is a newer China Glaze, from their neon collection last year, and it’s awesome – I love seeing a more blue-toned neon green instead of the usual acid-green hue, and the formula is great, too. And as always, Color Club’s Warhol is super opaque and super bright. Mmmm, neons.

As for the “square” part, I added some gold square studs from Born Pretty Store at each cuticle, secured with a drop of top coat. I love adding studs to my manis, but even if I put top coat over top, they usually pop off within 24 hours, so I don’t use them that often.

Japanese Koi isn't coming across as neon here as it is in person, but it's BRIGHT.

Sorry this was so short, but it was was super simple mani and I didn’t have much to say about it ha. Thank you so much for reading, and I’ll see you next time! – A x

May Nail Art Challenge #2: Dots!

[Apologies – this post was supposed to go up on May 4, the date of the second prompt, but it didn’t post for some reason, so today is going to be a double post as I upload this late!]

Hi everyone! How’s your week going? It’s been deliciously overcast and rainy here this week, which of course I am loving! It partly inspired today’s manicure, since I wanted something a bit darker than the brights I’ve been obsessed with lately.

As I said in my last post, all this month I’m doing manis based off prompts from a nail art challenge I found on Instagram, and today’s prompt is dots. I feel like I’ve been doing dots a lot lately, so I wanted to do something a little different, and I love doing designs at my cuticle, so I decided to do a little dot pyramid.

The base is OPI’s Amazon, AmazOFF (sigh…those OPI names, man). I really love this color – it’s a gorgeous, saturated jungle green and I can’t get enough, despite usually preferring more yellow-toned greens. The formula was great, too, so definitely pick this one up if you want to add a deep green to your collection! For the design, I didn’t really know what I was going for, so I just kind started playing around, and I really like the idea of it, although my execution was a bit shitty (partly because I smudged two of my nails and had to try to salvage them, blerg). I knew I wanted to do something at the cuticle, so I used my largest dotting tool for one dot, then did some smaller ones surrounding it. I used my tiniest dotting tool to do the gold of the outer dots, and I should’ve used it to do the gold dot in the middle of the biggest one, but I used my big tool and thus covered up way more of Warhol than I wanted. Oh well, it’s not too bad for just winging it!

Tropical Aqua and Lime

I used to love wearing two different nail colors on each hand – one color on my left, one color on my right. I realized the other day that I haven’t done that in forever, so I pulled out some of my brightest and happiest colors to do just that!

(Sorry my lighting is a little weird in these pics - I still don't have my lightbox yet (nowhere to put it right now) and I was rushing to take these pics before the sun totally went away, hence the blue tint.)

Blue-Ming is the prettiest aqua blue, but the formula sucks (like most pastel neon colors). It also chips really quickly on me, but the color is to die. I used two of my dotting tools to make the curved line of dots – first I added a few bigger dots, then I filled in the rest of the space with smaller dots. I ended up wanting to add some gold, too, so I just put it over a few existing green dots.

The green polish featured here is from Lime Crime. I know it’s a terrible company, but I bought this polish, Pastelchio, and the purple, Lavendairy, years ago, before I really knew much about the company. Last year (or was it 2014?) was that awful incident where lots of people got their credit cards ripped off because Lime Crime didn’t want to put better security measures in effect (i.e. they were being cheap), and that’s when I found out about the whole host of other shitty practices Lime Crime had engaged in the past. I do have a few more products from them – a few eyeliners and a liquid lipstick – but again, I got them a few years ago before I knew of any issues, and I’m going to keep using them because I really like the formula and the colors, but I won’t be repurchasing (I believe China Glaze has colors that dupe both the green and purple that I own, anyway). Okay, rant over!

I really love the color combo of aqua, lime, and gold, and Honey Ryder is the perfect gold – not too yellow, not to champagne-y, and with just the right metallic sheen. It’s no secret that I love OPI’s texture polishes, and this is one of my favorites. I’m weird about golds, so the fact that this is my preferred hue AND it’s a texture? Yas, yas, yas!

I hope you liked this look! It was a lot of fun, and it got me some compliments, which is always nice. I haven’t been feeling very nail art-y lately, so I’m going to participate in a nail art challenge I found on Instagram in May to try to get me back into it, which means lots of posts this month! Thanks for reading, see you guys soon with my first challenge – A x

Summery Pink and Green

Hi everyone! It feels like I just used the Moroccan decals from What’s Up Nails, but I was dying to use them again, and I used a really fun color combo that resulted in a mani that I didn’t want to take off (and surprisingly lasted almost a week!).

3.7.16 Fancy Fingerg Guns bottles

I haven’t bought very many mainstream nail polishes lately…they just aren’t really grabbing me. Or, if I like a color, I don’t like it enough to actually buy it. But late last year I found Be More Pacific and another color from that 2014 Off Shore collection (Float On, which I got just for the name) super cheap on eBay, so I purchased them. This is the first time I’ve worn Be More Pacific and ugh the formula is terrible, y’all! This was three coats on most nails (four on one or two) because it was super streaky, so frustrating. But the color….oh man, do I love the color! The photos here aren’t accurate – no matter what I did, I couldn’t get the true pale lime green hue to come out, so it looks more blue-toned/minty but it’s definitely yellow-toned in person. I love these kinds of greens, so this guy stays in my collection despite the shitty formula.

I used these Moroccan decals not too long ago, but I couldn’t resist throwing them on again because I love them! All-over decal designs like this are hard – you have to peel them off quickly but not too quickly, lest the polish smear and ruin the crisp lines of the design, and while one or two of these guys didn’t turn out perfectly, for the most part these look really great! Since the length of my nail means I only use up a little over half of one decal, I cut off a piece with no residual polish and applied them to my pinkie, pointer, and thumb cuticles to vary the look a little. I used Color Club’s Warhol to go over the decals because I thought the super saturated magenta would look great with BMP’s light green, and I think is looks so fun and summery!

3.7.16 Fancy Fingerg Guns diagonal

Despite the 3 coats of BMP, two coats of top coat (once to seal BMP before the decal and again to top the whole look), and one thick coat of Warhol, this surprisingly lasted almost the entire week on my nails! This is day 4, I think, and I’ve only got one little chip on my thumb. Sorcery! Usually when I have lots of layers of polish like that it chips instantly, so this is crazy wear time.

I’ve been craving nothing but blues lately, so I was trying to break out of that with this mani. But now I’m wanting to put another blue back on! Hmmmm must troll Pinterest for more color ideas…by the way, due to a weird issue, I can’t log into my original Fancy Finger Guns Pinterest account, so I created a new one: https://www.pinterest.com/fancy_fg/. I’m going to be going through my polish collection this weekend and re-organizing and purging, which means I’ll be updating the boards that have swatches of colors I own sorted by brand, so be sure to check that out next week! Thanks for reading, and I hope you have a great weekend. See you next time – A x
