Holiday Mani #7: Glitter & Ice

Hello everyone, and merry Christmas if you celebrate! There are certain polishes that I feel like I can only use at this time of year – they just scream “Christmas,” even if they’re not traditional red and green, but I can only do so many holiday manicures each year so some of them don’t get enough love. This year I decided to combine a few of my old favorites so they can get their time in the sun!

ILNP's Christmas in Bordeaux, China Glaze's Frosty

ILNP’s Christmas in Bordeaux, China Glaze’s Frosty

Frosty is really gorgeous. It’s from what I think is the best China Glaze holiday collection (best holiday collection ever, really), 2010’s ‘Tis The Season To Be Naughty And Nice. I really liked that collection because they had traditional colors (a billion reds, metallics) but also hues that still came across as “holiday” without being too overused, like navy blue, olive, and plum. Anyway, Frosty is a semi-sheer white with iridescent shimmer that mimics that sparkle of sunlight on fresh snow. I think I did 5 thin coats to attempt to get rid of the nail lines at the tips of my nails, which I hate, but ughhh this color is so lovely and delicate, I’m gonna overlook it!

For the glitter fade at the cuticle, I just sort of dabbed and swirled a little blob of ILNP’s Christmas In Bordeaux (CIB) on each finger to put the glitter pieces where I wanted them on my nail. I always say this, but I really wish ILNP would do glitter mixes again – I have a bunch of Barbra’s glitters that I picked up when they all went on sale as she made her move to exclusively holographic and multichrome polishes a few years ago, and while her current polishes are all beautiful, I still love her glitters because they were all so beautiful and usually unique. CIB is Christmas in a bottle with its evergreen, holly-berry red, and bright gold hexes, squares, shards, and micro glitter – understated, chic holiday glamour! It looks so lovely over Frosty.

For those who celebrate, how was your Christmas? It’s been unseasonably warm (and humid!) even here in Florida, which has made me a little grumpy, honestly, and it hasn’t really felt like Christmas. But my family tried our best to make it feel like Christmas – we switched up our usual tree ornaments for sparkly iridescent tinsel and DIY neon ball ornaments, did our annual Christmas Vacation screening on Christmas Eve, and had a smorgasbord of random tasty items as a sort of Christmas buffet. Also, not gonna lie, I was pretty proud of myself for the presents I got them this year – sometimes it’s pretty difficult to get things I’m sure they’ll actually love, but this year I did really well! I cleaned up pretty well, too, getting some fun stuff including a [Uber Chic Mat knockoff]! I only recently learned about these types of mats, but as soon as I saw them I immediately let my family know it would be a great present. I haven’t gotten a chance to play with it much yet, since I didn’t bring any polishes or tools with me this year, but I can’t wait to try it out once I get back to California! I might even do a little video or something, hmmmm. Anyway, my Christmas was wonderful, and I hope yours was, too! When I get back to LA, I’ll be doing a post with a round-up and swatches of some polishes I ordered during Black Friday/Cyber Monday, so watch out for that after the new year. Until then, thank you so much for another year of reading my blog! Have a wonderful rest of your year – A x

Green Ombre Party!

I’m really into greens lately and couldn’t resist using a few of them together, resulting in this green explosionnnnnn.

07-21-14 bottles

I wore just Highlight of My Summer (HOMS) by itself for a day or so because it’s the best mint evaaaaa – so fantastically bright, and usually the formula is obnoxious but somehow this time I only needed two coats. Turns out, HOMS is the exact color I just painted my nightstand, too! I guess I’m on a bright mint kick…

Sorry about my cuticles - they're a little dry and I kinda messed up my clean up a bit :/

I painted The Real Teal (which looks super blue next to the mint) and HOMS on a wrung-out makeup wedge and sort of rolled it on my nails, then dabbed a bit up and down to make sure the middle looked like a smooth gradation. After that dried, I carefully applied one coat of Emerald Dew Drops (EDD). I’ve extolled the virtues of ILNP’s glitters before, but ughhhh they’re so good, y’all! I think Barbra, sold off the remaining glitter polishes during her last sale (when I scooped up EDD plus three holos) and I understand that she’s found her niche as a holo/multichrome creator now, but I do hope that she eventually makes glitter again. I just love her combinations, they’re so unique and lovely!

EDD is comprised of solid and translucent white hexes and bars, teal squares and shards, smaller green hexes, and holo micro glitter. I love itttttt – even with the bar glitter, which is not usually my jam – and think it’ll look fab over an array of colors. The formula is fantastic for a glitter, it’s not hard to move pieces around on the nail and you get a good amount of glitter with each swipe. I used two coats of NYC’s In A New York Minute to smooth it out because my Seche is all dried up, but EDD isn’t too bumpy so it feels fine.

I got a ton of compliments on this combo! With the neon mint and sparkly glitter, it’s a real eye-catcher – I had people at work grab my hand to get a better look ha. It’s held up very well, too and I think I’ll wear it until I get a chip. I hope you enjoyed this post, see ya next time! – A x

Blue and Green

Damn, I forgot how annoying it is to get flakie polishes off! I wanted to slap on something pretty simple after that strenuous removal, but I ended up doing a little of everything to my nails.

03-20-14 bottles

I used to wear Aquadelic on one hand and Gaga For Green on the other all the time – lo, those many moons ago when I didn’t have six or so containers full of nail polish. The funny thing about wearing these two colors is they’re not that drastically different, so for example, I’d have coworkers go all day before realizing I had two different colors on and being super baffled when they realized! It’s the perfect solution for someone like me, a tragically indecisive individual – which color? Wear ’em both!

I could NOT get this app to let me make each hand the same size, which is why my right hand looks smaller than my right. Oy.

These are both from the Electropop collection in 2012, and after only two years my poor bottles are starting to show their age. Aquadelic was weirdly goopy, and Gaga For Green was super sheer and a little runny on its first coat, needing three total to look okay. The colors are still great, though – Aquadelic is the perfect aqua, and I love the fresh, juicy apple green of Gaga. I got a little bored after a day or two, though, so I added a tiny circular stud to my index and pinkie fingers, stamped the triangle design from Bundle Monster plate BM-423 on my rings, and put a coat of I Love Nail Polish’s 11:59 on my middle fingers.

In photos the triangle stamping looks really bad and super smudged but in real life it looks totally fine. I love 11:59 over both of these, Aquadelic especially. It’s got tiny black and gold hexes, larger black squares, and gold circles and micro glitter. Loooooove! I know ILNP is all about making awesome multi-chromes and holos now, but I first found the shop after seeing swatches of her amazing glitters (and promptly bought a bunch of them) and I wish she’d make some new ones!

Two nights ago I got to go to the Parks & Recreation panel for Paleyfest and it was awesome! Being a huge TV fan, I’ve always wanted to go, and they had so many great shows featured this year! In a perfect world I would’ve gone to The Mindy Project, Orange Is The New Black, Masters of Sex, Veep, and Veronica Mars (I watch a LOT of TV, y’all) in addition to P&R, but I decided I’d only go to one and I chose Parks because I thought this would be its last season. Luckily it got renewed, but I’m still really glad I went, since P&R is one of my absolute favorite shows – it’s like the TV show equivalent of a big ol’ hug that’s hilarious to boot, and if you don’t watch it what the hell are you doing?! Go stream it on Netflix NOW.

03-20-14 Paleyfest cast

We got to watch Thursday’s (tonight’s) episode before the panel started and when the cast came in I was pleased to see Ben Schwartz, aka Jean-Ralphio, included! He unfortunately didn’t really talk much but it made me feel better knowing he was there, since Jean-Ralphio is one of my ultimate fav secondary characters (tied with Joan Calamezzo, obvs).

It was really cool – the creator/writer Michael Schur talked about creating the characters and the show, and Amy Poehler got teary-eyed talking about how much she loved working on the show and getting to be Leslie Knope every day. When they asked the audience for questions, there was a completely bonkers dude who just kept freaking out about how excited he was to be picked for a question and how much he loved everyone on the show, and it he was so effusive and awkward that the cast and everyone in the audience just completely cracked up for almost ten minutes while he freaked out. Then he finally asked a question: “How are you guys like the characters you play, like Retta, are you just always like “Oh hell no, DAMN!” (+ sassy snap fingers), which set everyone off again.

Amy even got to prove her awesomeness by scolding the male audience member who started his question off with “This is the tits!” She and Retta, by the way, walked on stage drinking out of tiny plastic cups, and halfway through when a guy came out to give an envelope to Patton Oswald (the moderator), she jokingly asked him if he would bring out more wine. And he popped back out with the bottle! She offered some to Retta, who declined, as she was drinking champagne like the goddess she is.

Wow this was a long one, if you stuck it out for the whole thing, thank you for reading! See you next time! A x

Little Mermaid Glitter!

I had another post scheduled but I’ve been busy the past few days, then my nails were all chipped and I didn’t really want to redo them. But anyway, today I have a fun combination that includes one of my all-time favorite glitters!

03-08-14 bottles

I do have a fair amount of indie polishes, but I haven’t bought any in more than a year because the indie polish business exploded and I simply can’t keep up. There are WAY too many options and if I’m not 1,000% percent sure I’ll love it I really can’t afford the higher price tags, so I’ve been completely abstaining. This little indie beauty, though, I saw swatched on a random blog about two years ago, and I immediately purchased it. How could I not? It’s totally the Little Mermaid herself in a bottle and I loved it from the first time I put it on!

03-08-14 curled around Ariel bottle

I usually layer this over either Zoya Zuza or Wednesday, because I think the faded aquas really complement Ariel while still allowing the colors to pop. But I decided to change it up today and use Lime Crime’s Lavendairy, one of my favorite purples. It’s got a fantastic formula (and is almost a one-coater! A one-coater pastel polish. Did I just blow your mind?!) and I love the warm, pink-toned lavender hue.

Quick pic of Lavendairy by itself. One of the few color-accurate photos I managed to get!

I thought this bright pastel would look great under the saturated purple, green, and red color scheme, and while the end look is a leeeeetle bit more girly than I prefer, I still really love it. The brush for Ariel is a little longer than I’m used to, with thin but long bristles, but I was able to move the glitter around easily to get even coverage.

Outdoor pic!

Outdoor pic! Sorry for my dry-ass cuticles.

I adore square glitter and love the combination of hex + square glitter even more, so this polish already had that in its favor. And not only has the essence of Ariel been perfectly captured in the red squares (hair), purple hexes (shells), and smaller green hexes (tail), but there’s a gorgeous fine green and white (flake?) shimmer that brings this glitter topper to another level of awesome.

Here's a close up to see that lovely shimmer.

Perfect match!

Ariel is still available, as are a bunch of other cool sea-inspired polishes by Sea Lore. I think the color combo is bright and fun even if you’re not a huge Disney fan. I must confess, as a kid I wasn’t a huge fan of Ariel – I mean, obvs I wanted her hair and pretended I was her in the pool, but I was always way more a fan of the Disney villains. Let’s be real, Disney princesses (and princes, for that matter – although I did always like cheeky Prince Philip) as a whole don’t have the most personality, but the villains are always so fun and deliciously evil, with great lines and catchy-ass songs about their eeeeeevil plots. Ursula has always been one of my top fav villains, of course (my #1 is Maleficent, and let’s not talk about that shit-tastic looking live-action movie, UGH). I mean:

Please teach me how to be that fabulous. via

Someone please teach me how to be this fabulous. via

Anyone else love Disney villains way more than the main characters? Any thoughts on this mani?

Thank you for reading! See you next time – A x
